Mortein, with the support of the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health is to host an event at Northmead Primary School in tribute of World Malaria Day taking place on the 25th April, 2014. For Mortein- a leading insect repellent brand in Zambia- education and awareness are key factors in combating the malaria epidemic. This year, as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts, Mortein has decided to focus on educating the children of Zambia on malaria prevention, as children are particularly vulnerable to the disease. In order to maximise their impact on the young learners, Mortein will be hosting an interactive, fun and educational game- “The Mosquito Run”- that reinforces the message of protecting oneself against Malaria. Parents, administrators, teachers and the media are all invited to join in the festivities, where refreshments will be provided.

At the event, Mortein will host various representatives of the Ministry of Health as they shed some light on the programs that the Ministry and its subsidiaries have provided in order to combat Malaria. Mortein will also have a representative to present insights on the future of Malaria and the company’s contribution to fighting it, thereby highlighting the Mortein Against Malaria Campaign.

In addition, Mortein will be making a generous donation of 1,000 mosquito nets. Product hampers will also be donated to the school, including both young pupils and teachers, as well as to the media and general public.

About Mortein’s Work in Zambia and Africa

Whilst significant progress in malaria control has been achieved in Zambia, it has not been sustained in all parts of the country; lapses in prevention coverage have led to a resurgence of infection and illness in rural areas of the Nation.  Children are the most vulnerable demographic, with three children dying from malaria each day in Zambia.

The Mortein Against Malaria Campaign is a program that engages with community leaders and community health workers, under which Mortein has so far contributed upwards of ZMW150,000 towards malaria relief and education. As part of this campaign, community health workers have mobilised a door-to-door malaria awareness program that is aimed at educating the community on how to effectively prevent the disease.  Those who show signs and symptoms of malaria infection are encouraged to seek treatment at their nearest health centre. Campaign materials have included posters, booklets and t-shirts and have all been distributed to help encourage greater awareness and action in the area.

Mortein has also founded numerous different corporate social responsibility projects that target high risk malaria zones. These programs have been successfully implemented across Nigeria, Zambia and Kenya.

Mpombo dismisses as political gibberish call for MMD de-registration

The Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President George Mpombo has described as political gibberish the statement that the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) should voluntarily de-register if party president Nevers Mumba remains defiant to calls for a convention.

MMD spokesperson Dora Siliya has been quoted to have warned that if the former ruling party waits until 2016 to have Dr. Mumba removed as party President there will be no MMD to talk about the more reason it should de-register itself if it fails to raise money for holding of an extraordinary convention to elect new office-bearers.

But Dr. Mpombo, who is also former Defense Minister under the previous MMD regime, has told Qfm news that the idea of having the former ruling party de-registered on the basis of Dr. Mumba’s alleged defiance to calls for a convention has no substance and does not make any sense.

Dr. Mpombo adds that such kind of reasoning as has been attributed to Ms. Siliya is also hollow and politically bankrupt as there is no person in his right frame of mind who would subscribe to the de-registration of the former ruling party on the basis of what he has termed as petty wrangles.

The PDP president says what the MMD should instead do is to understand the important role it plays in the working of the country%u2019s democracy especially that it is the biggest opposition political party.

He says it is for this reason that people that are calling for de-registration of the MMD are on the wrong side of history as they do not understand the important role that the former ruling party plays in the democratization process of the country.

The opposition leader says what should also be understood is that the issue is not about Dr. Mumba being the MMD president but that it is about the MMD being the biggest opposition political with the capacity to provide check and balances to the Patriotic Front (PF) government.

He says it is on this basis he also finds the maneuvers to have Dr. Mumba removed as the MMD president as being a parochial agenda as it goes against the very purpose of the existence of the former ruling party.

Sata urged to emulate KK’s philosophy of tribal balancing

Opposition Forum for Democratic Alternatives (FDA) has implored President Michael Sata to emulate the first republican President Kenneth Kaunda’s philosophy of tribal balancing in public governance matters.

In a statement to Qfm news FDA General Secretary Kennedy Mubanga says an attribute that Dr. Kaunda has left for himself as a legacy and which is also an attribute of the late President Dr. Levy Patrick Mwanawasa, is what Mr. Sata should imitate as opposed engaging in divisive politics.

Mr. Mubanga says in congratulating Dr. Kaunda on his 90th birthday which falls on the 28th this month, his party thanks him for ably leading and uniting the nation through his famous slogan One Zambia One Nation coupled with the philosophy of tribal balancing in public governance matters.

Mr. Mubanga says it is Dr. Kaunda’s attributes of uniting the nation and the need for President Sata to emulate such attributes that his party the FDA has spoken.

He says this is in in view of the nation’s alleged flying apart wherein the ruling Patriotic Front’s survival in government which he alleges is only by means of brutal force against those perceived to pose serious threat to its hold on power.

The FDA General Secretary says his party also believes that Dr. Kaunda will go down in the annals of history as a statesman and true father of the nation.

Hakainde Hichilema’s Tribute to Dennis Liwewe

Colleagues, country men and country women, the country faces yet another dark day on the passing of our venerated veteran soccer commentator Dennis Liwewe. On behalf of the UPND and my own and my family’s behalf, we wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to Mrs Liwewe and the entire Liwewe family, and the people of Zambia in the face of this tragedy.

In his own words, Liwewe would say, he eats football, drinks football and sleeps football. And true to these words, Liwewe was an embodiment of football, he was an encyclopedia of not only Zambian soccer but soccer in general but his passionate lay with Zambian soccer. It would be a lie to not acknowledge that, in the 70’s up to the late 90’s, a football match was incomplete without the voice of Liwewe. His descriptions were so captivating that you would literally be seeing the match even if it was on radio. Some of us would be ‘watching’ the match while tuned in to radio, that was Liwewe’s influence.

How do I remember Liwewe? Personally I came into contact with the man like every football fan, through his radio commentaries and meeting him in person later in my life was fulfilling. As young men, we would crowd around one of those supersonic two band radio sets. His voice would reverberate through the speaker and in shortwave his voice would go up and down as the waves permitted. Two things stand out for me. One; the day we lost our entire national team in Gabon, we could not have chosen a better man to give a fitting tribute to the departed gallant men of this country. I could safely say, Dennis was the reason a decision was made by FAZ to proceed with the rest of the matches which saw Zambia as runners up at the Afcon 94. Secondly; later in the year, Liwewe led a legion of soccer fans to protest against the handling of a world cup qualifier that was refereed by one Jean Claude Diramba in Morocco. That match effectively closed the door to USA’94 after losing to Morocco in suspicious circumstances in Rabat. That was his passion for Zambian soccer. When everyone was down, Liwewe would recount how football was 90 minutes and that things could happen in very few seconds in football. When you were a guest in a foreign country two names would always come up, KK and Liwewe. That is the legacy Liwewe leaves behind.

To us countrymen and countrywomen, let us honour Liwewe in a manner fitting a soccer legend, because that is what he was. We are known to be united around football because of Liwewe’s efforts. Let us do so as we mourn this great soccer icon and give him a fitting send off.

To his family, I know that some family members are involved in football already. I would like to urge them to continue carrying the legacy of their father. That is the only way to ensure that his name lives forever.

To the state, this is the time to honour Liwewe by ensuring that one of the national soccer establishments is named after this great son of Zambia. Nothing less than that will be a fitting tribute to this great son of Africa. One could easily say that Liwewe, through his tireless efforts and commentary, single handedly made soccer the sport it is today in this country.

May His Soul Rest In Peace and God Bless him and his family

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 search halted due to stormy weather

An air search for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet was suspended for a day due to stormy weather on Tuesday as the painstakingly slow sonar scanning of a targeted patch of seabed continued.

Up to 10 planes were to scour the ocean surface for debris on Tuesday over an area covering 19,000 square miles centered 1,000 miles northwest of the Australian west coast city of Perth, the search coordination center said in a statement.

But the center later said the planes would be grounded due to poor weather related to a tropical cyclone developing north of the search area.

“It has been determined that the current weather conditions are resulting in heavy seas and poor visibility, and would make any air search activities ineffective and potentially hazardous,” the center said in a statement.

Ten ships were searching the ocean surface on Tuesday, while a robotic submarine was finishing its ninth mission scanning the silt-covered seafloor since the search for wreckage shifted beneath the waves on April 14.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: Sub makes fifth attempt to find missing airliner

The center said the U.S. Navy’s Bluefin 21 had so far covered more than 80 percent of the 120-square-mile seabed search zone, creating a three-dimensional sonar map of the ocean floor. Nothing of interest had been found.

The 2.8-mile deep search area is a circle 12 miles wide around an area where equipment picked up a signal on April 8 consistent with a plane’s black boxes. The plane’s flight data and cockpit recorders’ beacons were only designed to transmit signals for 30 days after a crash and their batteries are now presumed to be dead.

The search coordination center said the sonar scan of the seafloor in that area was expected to be completed sometime this week.

Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has said that even if no debris was recovered, the scope of the search may be broadened or other assets may be used.

Radar and satellite data show the jet carrying 239 passengers and crew veered far off course on March 8 for unknown reasons during a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. Analysis indicates it would have run out of fuel in the remote section of ocean where the search has been focused. Not one piece of debris has been recovered since the massive multinational hunt began.

ZANIS reports from Kalabo that the traditional ruler said this in an interview at his palace , today.

CSPR urges govt to intervene in fuel price hikes

$

The Civil Society for Poverty reduction (CSPR) in Eastern Province has appealed to government to intervene in the recently increased fuel pump prices.
CSPR Provincial Coordinator, Maxson Nkhoma, stated that the decision to increase the pump prices will impact negatively on the ordinary Zambians who are already living under the poverty datum line of one Dollar per day.
Mr Nkhoma said this in a press statement released to ZANIS in Chipata today.
He stated that government, through the Ministry of Finance, should work on strengthening the depreciation of the Kwacha to regain its strength against other currencies while the Ministry of Energy and its subsidiary entities like Energy Regulatory Board (ERB) find other practical measures to subside the fuel.
“As CSPR we feel and know that government should have found other practical ways of ensuring that monies saved from subsidies could have been channelled to benefit the many citizens than increasing the fuel pump price,” he said.
Mr Nkhoma noted that the timing of fuel hikes is bad as the country is threatened by hunger because of poor rainfall pattern experienced during 2013/14 farming season.
He further complained that prices of essential commodities are already high, adding that the recent hike of fuel prices will worsen the situation hence the need for government to intervene.
He has also urged the Consumer Protection Commission to also monitor the situation on the market to ensure that ordinary Zambians are protected from exploitation.
“CSPR is also aware that government has given out 17 oil exploration licenses to 12 companies who are currently carrying out exploration of oil in seven out of ten provinces, Eastern inclusive, although not much has been achieved but would be good to scale up the exploration activities on oil as Zambia may stand to benefit if the commodity is found,” he stressed.
Mr Nkhoma also said it is sad that transporters and other traders take advantage of fuel increments to charge unrealistic fares to members of the general public thereby exploiting citizens and also cause artificial prices on goods and services.
Recently, the ERB increased the fuel pump prices by eight per cent.

Ruling party is not Government, Government is not a ruling party – UPND

They are shouting and no one is Listening

The fortunate thing about politics and Governance is that, a ruling party is not Government, and the Government is not a ruling party. We are therefore not moved by the headline in today’s news that PF have warned against early campaigns is at best laughable, at worst foolish. We shall elect to laugh.

Lets take you back a bit, on 31st December 2001, PF had started campaigning. Remember the election was held on 27th December. On 1st November 2006, PF was on the campaign trail again. Remember this election was held on 28th October. In 2008, after a bitter exchange with a BBC reporter, the very next day PF was on the campaign trail. Now the funny thing is even on September 23rd, 2011, PF temporarily forgot they had won the election and the man elected, thought he was in opposition and made a mockery of the constitution and nominated 10 MPs.

We are digressing. Here is the issue, we set a campaign in motion the day we lost the 2011 election. There is no law that prohibits us from campaigning. So we have some news for PF, our campaign is in full gear, you closed the rally option, we circumvented you. You have virtually closed all avenues, the latest being what your chairman on the copperbelt said, we need permission to visit those areas not considered our strongholds. That is not only absurd, but illegal. Did we say illegal? We forgot, in PF even killing is no longer illegal.

Well ladies and gentlemen its time to hit the campaign trail again. Wamene safuna, ankhale pa nyumba tizamupeza!

CHIPULUKUSU residents in Ndola are flocking in large numbers to listen to court proceeding at the newly opened local court in the area.
The benches in court are always taken up with some residents sitting on the floor while others follow the proceedings through peeping from the windows.
Some residents have commended the Government for building a local court in the area because it would enable the community to also know country’s laws.
Mr Richard Mwansa who was found at the court premises said the opening of the court was restoring order to one of the notorious townships in the city.
“The Government has done well to open a court here, at least people that commit offences will be brought here without any difficulties,” Mr Mwansa said.
Another resident Suzan Mambwe said every time whenever she has nothing to do with her friends they rush to the court to listen to some interesting cases.
Ms Mambwe said the opening of the court had helped cut down on transports costs that the residents used to incur whenever they took their cases to either Chifubu, Kabushi and Ndola Main Local Courts.
Justin Malupande said people in the area were now afraid to commit offences because they were scared of being taken to court.
Mr Malupandwe said the community would now begin to respect the country’s laws.
He said there were a lot of happenings in the area but with the court in the vicinity criminal and civil offences would reduce.
The Chipulukusu Local Court which was opened on March 31, is situated next to the Police Post in the area.

ZICA invests $300m in L/stone convention centre

THE Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) has laid a foundation stone for the construction of a state-of-the-art convention centre in Livingstone at a cost of US$ 300 million.

ZICA recently acquired a 48 hectares piece of land on the boundary of Mosi-oa-tunya National Park in Livingstone to construct the convention centre.

Speaking in Livingstone at the weekend when he laid the foundation stone, outgoing ZICA president Frederick Banda said the convention centre would have capacity to accommodate about 2, 000 delegates.

ZICA also has plans to construct a five-star hotel, a mini-conference and a park within the same area.

‘‘The convention centre will add value to the people of Livingstone and Zambia at large as it will create jobs in the country,’’ Mr Banda said.

And ZICA chief executive officer, Hapenga Kabeta said in an interview that the Institute would erect a marquee at the same site within two years to be hosting big events.

‘‘If you remember, ZICA members used to meet at Zambezi Sun Hotel for various meetings and we used to attract about 300 to 400 people across the country.

‘‘Last year, we had 700 members, while we have about 900 delegates this year during our annual gathering. This is why it is increasingly becoming necessary to find a suitable place for our meetings in Livingstone as the current facilities are not meant for our bigger gatherings,’’ he said.

ZICA has lately been holding its annual meetings outside Zambezi Sun Hotel in a tent as its members cannot be accommodated inside the hotel conference room.

‘‘In Lusaka, only the Government Complex can manage to host our meetings but our members want to have their meetings outside the capital city.

‘‘The convention centre is not only for ZICA but a contribution to the tourism sector of Livingstone and other stakeholders who may be interested to hire it. For instance, lawyers and engineers usually hold their annual meetings here and they can hire our facility,’’ Mr Kabeta said.

Police spokesperson Charity Chanda confirmed yesterday that the incident happened on Saturday around 03:00 hours at house number 33.

Ms Chanda named the deceased as Ethel Ngondwe, a teacher at one of the schools in Kitwe, while the suspects have been identified as Emmanuel Katongo, 23, and Ongani Katongo, 18,
Ms Chanda said after allegedly attacking and murdering Ms Ngondwe, Emmanuel and Ongani turned on their father, Emmanuel Katongo, 47, and stabbed him with an unknown object in the neck.
