A 23 year old man of Police Camp in Nchelenge District in Luapula Province has drowned on Mweru Lake.
Luapula Province Police Commission Malcolm Mulenga confirmed the death in a telephone interview with ZANIS in Nchelenge June 8th.
Mr Mulenga identified the deceased as Mwansa Joel Mwalusi who died the night of June 7th around 20:00 hours after the canoe he was travelling in capsized.
The Police Commissioner said the accident happened when the deceased and his friend identified as Kelvin Chishala went fishing on the lake.
He said the boat the duo were using was hit by a strong wave forcing the canoe to capsize and that Chishala managed to swim to safety.
He said the body of the deceased has since been retrieved from the lake and is currently lying at Saint Paul’s Mission Hospital Mortuary awaiting burial.
